Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Doctors of Chiropractic practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is one of the oldest types of healing arts in the world. It is defined as the application of soft tissue manipulation to the human body. The benefits of massage are varied and far-reaching. Gilkey Chiropractic Clinic offers both 30 minute and one hour massages to its patients. Massage therapy may be covered by health insurance when prescribed by a chiropractor.

Erchonia Laser

The Erchonia laser emits visible coherent light that is applied to the affected area. Bundles of light energy pass through the dermal layers, and are received within the cell membrane by specific energy photo acceptors. The increase in intra-cellular energy results in altered cell membrane permeability, and physiological changes occur through an enzyme cascade to affect several biological processes. Within the injured musculoskeletal tissue, low-level laser light initiates increased microcirculation, and enhanced tissue regeneration. The overall effects are decreased pain and inflammation, and increased range of motion. The Erchonia laser was the first low-level laser in the world to be approved by the FDA for neck and shoulder pain. The Erchonia laser can also be used to aid in the treatment of such conditions as skin abrasions, acne, broken bones, etc..

Sports Rehabilitation

Gilkey Chiropractic Clinic provides sports rehabilitation to its athletic patients. Whether you are a serious athlete or a weekend warrior, we can provide the rehabilitation necessary to return from almost any injury. First, the doctor will assess the extent of the athletic injury and determine if rehabilitation is the proper course of action. If so, the doctor will prescribe a custom protocol designed to best rehabilitate the specific injury.

Proper nutrition is a vital component of any person's overall health and well-being. Many people underestimate the effect of the food they eat on their health status. Nutrition can affect processes such as bone density, immune function, weight control, inflammation, etc. We investigate a patient's nutritional habits, and then offer nutritional counseling to aid in the overall treatment process.

The human body is a complex machine with many different parts. All of these parts are linked together and designed to work in unison to produce a fluid motion. Chiropractors are thoroughly trained to understand these biomechanics and their effects on a person's health. Bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves all play vital roles in working together to produce the movement of the human body. If there is a problem with any one of these tissues, it can cause a problem throughout the rest of the body. Therefore, we assess and correct the biomechanics of our patients to alleviate as many of these problems as possible.

dry needling

Intramuscular manual therapy/dry needling (IMT/DN) involves place a small filiform needle (less than 0.25mm in diameter) into the myofascial trigger points (painful knots) in muscles, tendons, ligaments or near nerves in order to stimulate a healing response in painful musculoskeletal conditions. IMT/DN is a valuable treatment tool for musculoskeletal related pain, such as soft tissue and joint pain as well as to improve muscle performance. Dry needling is not acupuncture or oriental medicine; that is, it does not have the purpose of altering the flow of energy (“Qi”) along traditional Chinese meridians for the treatment of disease. Like any treatment there are possible complications. While these complications are rare in occurrence, it is recommended you read through the possible risks prior to giving consent to treatment. In the treatment of knee osteoarthritic pain, the filiform needles are inserted distal to the knee cap through the skin onto the top of the tibial bone (shin). Dry needling has been shown to facilitate the release of natural opioids as well as decreasing the release of pro-inflammatory substances. Benefits of Dry Needling in the treatment of knee and hip osteoarthritis include: -facilitates the release of natural opioids -decreases the release of pro-inflammatory substances -increases synovial fluid production (joint lubrication) -decrease the formation of bone absorbing cells (known as osteoclasts)
